SANTA FE, N.M. — The Santa Fe Police Department says its DWI unit arrested five people for impaired driving over a 72-hour period and charged a teenager in a separate street racing case.
According to police, several of the DWI arrests involved aggravated charges, including cases where drivers refused to take sobriety tests. Two of those cases involve individuals with prior DWI convictions, and officers obtained search warrants to conduct blood draws as part of the investigations.
Among those arrested was a 38-year-old Santa Fe man facing a fourth DWI offense, along with charges including careless driving and resisting an officer. Another 32-year-old man is also facing a fourth DWI charge, along with additional violations including driving on a revoked license and possession of a controlled substance.
Police also arrested two more drivers in separate incidents Friday night after officers observed signs of impairment during traffic stops. A fifth driver was taken into custody early Saturday morning after officers reported erratic driving.
In a separate case, officers stopped a 15-year-old driver who was allegedly traveling 75 miles per hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone near Cerrillos Road. The teen was cited for reckless driving and racing on city streets. Police say the juvenile was later released to a parent.
All individuals arrested were booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center unless otherwise noted. Police say all suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
