ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO— A siamang is drawing attention after interacting with a young bird that entered its habitat in what staff describe as an unusual encounter.
Eve, a female siamang, was observed picking up the chick and displaying behaviors typically associated with infant care, including cradling and grooming. According to her care team, Eve also attempted to comfort the bird when it made noise.
When prompted by staff, Eve brought the chick to the enclosure mesh, allowing caregivers to safely access it. This type of response is something many animals in managed care are trained to do in situations involving their own offspring.
Caregivers were able to syringe feed the chick before retrieving it. Staff say the bird appeared healthy and unharmed and was later reunited with its mother.
The interaction was captured on video and shared by the zoo’s primate care team.
