ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico State Police say they will conduct sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and traffic enforcement operations across all counties throughout July.
The enforcement efforts will include checks for impaired driving, as well as verification of driver’s licenses, registration, and insurance.
State officials say the operations are funded in part through the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division, which provides overtime grants to agencies for enforcement, training, and equipment.
Sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols have been part of New Mexico’s traffic safety strategy for decades, particularly since the expansion of anti-DWI campaigns in the 1990s.
State leaders and law enforcement agencies began increasing checkpoint visibility and enforcement during that time as part of broader efforts to reduce alcohol-related crashes and fatalities.
These efforts have continued to expand through partnerships between state police, local law enforcement, and transportation officials, with regular statewide operations often scheduled during high-travel periods and summer months.
Officials say the goal of the July initiative is to increase visibility of enforcement and reduce impaired driving incidents on New Mexico roads.
Motorists may encounter checkpoints or patrols in any county throughout the month.
