Residents and businesses in Las Cruces are bracing for what could be a considerable jump in electricity rates if El Paso Electric is successful in getting their rate hike approved.
The average monthly bill for residential customers is estimated to jump by 57%. The utility has said higher revenue is needed for a range of costs including grid modernization, reliability, transmission expansion and rapid load growth in its territory. The rate hikes would result in about $70 million in yearly revenue for the utility. El Paso Electric has requested a final decision by January 1st 2027 when the utility plans to implement new rates. A public comment hearing has been scheduled on June 22nd in Las Cruces when members of the public will be able to weigh in on the proposed rate increase.
