Chama, NM (KKOB) – The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is set to reopen this week after a delayed start to the season.
Operations were pushed back in May due to drought conditions and elevated fire risk. Now, the historic steam train will resume service Tuesday June 9th, with a grand opening ceremony planned for June 13th.
The route spans 64 miles through the San Juan Mountains, taking passengers from New Mexico into Colorado. Officials say the railroad attracts more than 30 thousand visitors each year and was recently named USA Today’s Best Scenic Train Ride. The reopening also coincides with Chama’s Western Heritage Days festival.
