LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State baseball closed out its 2026 season Saturday with one of the most unusual games in college baseball this year.
The Aggies fell to Florida International 30-21 at Presley Askew Field, as the two teams combined for 51 total runs — the highest-scoring game in Division I this season.
High-scoring games of that magnitude are uncommon. Most Division I matchups typically finish with a combined score in the single digits or low teens, making a 50-plus run total rare.
New Mexico State held momentum midway through the game, building an 11-7 lead after a three-run double from Boston Vest in the fourth inning. But FIU responded with an 11-run seventh inning and continued to add on down the stretch to take control.
The game featured 44 total hits, 18 pitchers, and at least one run scored in every inning. Multiple runs were scored in 11 of the 18 half-innings.
Despite scoring 21 runs — their highest output against a Division I opponent this season — the Aggies were unable to contain FIU’s offense. Aidan Taclas added a two-run home run late for NM State.
With the loss, New Mexico State ends the season at 20-34 overall and 9-21 in Conference USA play. The Aggies closed the year losing 10 of their final 11 games and did not qualify for the conference tournament.
