Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — The growing use of digital technology is driving a rapid expansion of data centers, raising concerns about water use and environmental impacts. That’s according to Dr. Ana Pinheiro Privette, who spoke at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology this week. Privette says data centers, often referred to as “the cloud,” require large amounts of energy and water to operate, particularly for cooling systems. She noted the U.S. hosts about half of the world’s data centers and said water use remains one of the least transparent aspects of the industry.
