ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico’s unemployment rate remained unchanged in May, but new data shows it is still higher than this time last year.
According to the latest report, the state’s unemployment rate held at 4.9%, the same as April. However, that’s up from 4.0% in May 2025 and above the national rate of 4.3%.
The state added approximately 2,300 jobs over the past year, with most growth coming from the private sector. Gains were seen in industries like retail trade, transportation, and health services, while some sectors—including construction, financial activities, and information—experienced job losses.
Within government employment, state and local jobs increased slightly, while federal employment declined compared to last year.
The report highlights a mixed picture for New Mexico’s economy, with steady job growth in some areas balanced by declines in others. Economists say these trends can impact hiring, wages, and broader economic stability, offering insight into where the job market is strengthening and where challenges remain.
State officials say a more detailed labor market analysis is expected later this month.
