Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) -A 31 year old man is in custody in relation to a road rage fatal shooting that happened Thursday afternoon on San Mateo just south of Constitution.
According to police, Cecilio Lopez is accused of shooting a gun from a silver Ford Mustang he was driving and killing 19-year-old Roman Valenciano who was driving a gray Nissan Sentra. Valenciano, was on his way to pick up his mom after he finished work when the shooting happened.
According to police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos, surveillance video showed the Mustang make a U-turn on San Mateo Blvd. at Phoenix Rd. to go southbound. The Mustang turned into the path of Valenciano the Nissan, brake-checking and stopping in the middle of the road. As Valenciano was driving in the middle lane of San Mateo south of Constitution, police say Lopez accelerated and pulled up parallel to the Nissan and shot at that point. Valenciano died as heis vehicle came to a stop on San Mateo. A ShotSpotter notification at the same location at 1:48 p.m. confirmed shots were fired. Lopez then fled from the scene. Investigators using license plate readers arrested Lopez at a North Valley home earlier Friday evening
Lopez was on probation for a previous felony conviction.
Police say Lopez returned to the scene three times before finally driving to the North Valley home.
Lopez is charged with an open count of murder, tampering with evidence, shooting at or from a motor vehicle resulting in death, and felon in possession of a firearm.
