A Syrian national is in federal custody in NM after he was extradited from Costa Rica on human smuggling charges. Federal prosecutors indicate that Jalal Maklad Adeeb is alleged to have been coordinating human smuggling from Mexico City and bringing more than 100 individuals to the United States. Adeeb and his co-defendant, Somar Abdala Abdullah face charges of conspiring to bring noncitizens to the U.S. for financial gain, smuggling and aiding and abetting. The two were indicted last August but only Adeeb has been arrested so far. U.S. Magistrate Judge Damian Martinez of Las Cruces found Adeeb to be a flight risk and ordered him held in federal custody.
