Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller has announced that Cecily Barker has been selected as the next chief of the Albuquerque Police Department.
Barker had been serving as the department’s interim chief and was one of three finalists named earlier this month. The other finalists included Dallas Assistant Police Chief Gilberto Garza and former Seattle Assistant Police Chief Perry Tarrant.
The finalists were chosen from a pool of 19 applicants. At the time the finalists were announced, the mayor said a final decision was expected by the end of March.
Barker joined the Albuquerque Police Department in 2004 and has held a number of leadership roles during her tenure, including sergeant, lieutenant, deputy chief, and interim chief. She now takes on the role of permanent chief as the department continues efforts focused on public safety and reform.
