Roswell, NM (KKOB) – New Mexico State Police have released details about an officer involved shooting in Roswell that happened Wednesday night. Around 8:40 p.m. a state police officer tried to make a traffic stop on Main Street in Roswell, but the driver of the vehicle failed to stop, accelerated and a pursuit began until the driver entered a trailer park on North Kentucky Ave. The driver stopped once he hit a dead end. Another State Police officer had joined the chase and the two officers demanded the driver get out of the vehicle. According to the officers, the man now identified as 64-year old William James Roberts, reached for something inside the vehicle and when he exited, pointed a gun at the officers. Both officers fired several shots striking Roberts who was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead. Neither officer was injured and are now on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
