ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Looking to cut your own Christmas tree this holiday season? Permits for New Mexico’s national forests are now available online through Recreation.gov. The permits grant access to designated cutting areas in forests including Carson, Cibola, Santa Fe, Lincoln, and Gila.
Each forest has its own guidelines and cutting dates. For example, the Santa Fe National Forest limits households to three trees. Visitors must create or log in to a Recreation.gov account to complete the purchase.
Forest officials say cutting a Christmas tree helps improve forest health by thinning densely populated areas, reducing competition among trees and lowering wildfire risk.
