ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A new sign at Vista Del Norte dog park now honors the service of Louise—better known as Wheezy—Albuquerque Fire Rescue’s accelerant detection canine. Trained by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Wheezy began her career in 2018 and is capable of detecting six types of accelerants. Her work has supported fire investigations across Albuquerque and throughout New Mexico.
Wheezy’s handler, Lieutenant Ron Gunderson, joined AFR in 2004 and transitioned to the Fire Investigations Division in 2012 after attending the Police Academy. The pair became partners in 2018 and have since responded to scenes across all four corners of the state.
While Wheezy and Gunderson continue to serve, the sign at Vista Del Norte marks a tribute to their years of dedication and impact. Albuquerque Parks and Recreation helped make the recognition possible, preserving their contributions as part of the city’s shared public history.
Another AFR canine team—Captain Gray and Wrigley, part of the Crisis Response Team—will be honored at a future dog park location.
