ROSWELL, N.M. — New Mexico State Police are investigating a shooting involving law enforcement officers in Roswell early Thursday morning.
Roswell Police say officers responded to a home on the 600 block of East Sixth Street around 12:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a man threatening suicide. The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office also joined the initial response.
According to police, the man inside the home fired multiple rounds at officers, striking a Roswell police officer and a Chaves County sheriff’s deputy. Both sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was treated locally, while the deputy was flown to a hospital in Texas.
Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington credited his department’s training for the quick response that helped stabilize the deputy. Officials say a tourniquet was applied immediately, and the deputy was transported to the hospital by patrol car.
After phone negotiations, the suspect surrendered around 1:50 a.m. and was taken into custody. Police say he was armed with multiple firearms, including an automatic rifle, a flash grenade, and was wearing body armor.
The suspect faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery on a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, and child abuse.
State Police continue to lead the investigation.
