ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A bench trial scheduled for Wednesday was missed by Bobby Chavez, the Albuquerque man accused of throwing a dog at police during an attempted escape earlier this year. A warrant has now been issued for his arrest.
The incident occurred in May when officers responded to a loitering call at a gas station on Candelaria Road. Police say Chavez, 41, initially appeared to comply by reaching for his wallet, but instead threw a small Yorkie at officers and fled the scene.
Chavez allegedly jumped a fence and broke into a nearby apartment, where police say he held a woman against her will. She was able to escape, and Chavez surrendered shortly afterward.
Chavez was expected in court Wednesday for a bench trial related to the charges stemming from the incident. His failure to appear has prompted the court to issue a warrant.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
