ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — More than 3,000 backpacks are being distributed to Albuquerque students this weekend as part of the annual “Cruisin Into The School Year” supply drive.
Now in its eighth year, the event is a partnership between Albuquerque Youth & Family Services and Presbyterian Turquoise Care. Backpacks are available at two locations: West Mesa Community Center and Cesar Chavez Community Center, with over 1,500 backpacks at each site.
“The most crucial part of the school year is starting on the right foot,” said West Mesa Community Center Supervisor Dominic Saavedra. “Sometimes that just means having the right materials.”
The drive is open to students from preschool through high school. Each student will receive a backpack and can fill it with the supplies they need most. Organizers say the event has grown in both size and demand as families continue to face rising costs.
“Regardless of how many free events there are around the city, there’s always going to be a need,” Saavedra added. “That’s why we chose these specific sites—to reach high-need areas on both the west and east sides of the city.”
Families are asked to pre-register for the event. More information and registration details can be found on the City of Albuquerque’s website.
