ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Tuesday evening in northwest Albuquerque. The incident began around 4 p.m. near Calle Nortena and Wagon Mound Drive NW, where police responded to a domestic dispute.
According to APD Chief Harold Medina, the man involved was reportedly threatening suicide and may have been under the influence of pills. A police negotiator worked with the man for about 90 minutes before the suspect fired several rounds and barricaded himself inside a home.
Gunfire was later seen coming from a second-story window, followed by a brief exchange of gunfire with officers. The man was found injured and later died at the scene.
Investigators are working to determine whether the fatal wound was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire. APD says the man may have used up to three different weapons during the standoff. No officers were injured.
The suspect has not been publicly identified. Chief Medina noted the man had little to no known criminal history.
The scene was cleared just before 7:40 p.m., and the investigation remains ongoing.
