ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — What began as a routine traffic stop on Memorial Day ended in tragedy for the Bloomfield Police Department. Newly released lapel camera footage reveals the events that led to the fatal shooting of Officer Timothy Ontiveros.
The stop was initiated over a headlight violation. The video shows Officer Ontiveros engaging in a prolonged exchange with the driver, Dennis Armenta, who repeatedly refused to provide identification. After calling for backup, Officer Weaver arrived on the scene.
The situation escalated when both officers attempted to break the driver’s side window. As the glass shattered, Armenta opened fire, striking Officer Ontiveros. Officer Weaver returned fire, killing Armenta. Ontiveros later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Officer Ontiveros was laid to rest last month. In his memory, a tree has been planted in front of the Bloomfield Police Department. A bench and plaque will be added once the tree matures, offering a place for reflection and remembrance.
Deputy Chief Phillip Francisco emphasized the broader implications of the incident, pointing to the need for expanded mental health services in New Mexico.
“Clearly this guy wasn’t thinking correctly. Had a history of mental health issues,” Francisco said. “It highlights the need for those services in the state to help all law enforcement deal with those things.”
The Bloomfield community continues to mourn the loss of Officer Ontiveros, honoring his service and sacrifice.
