SANTA FE, N.M. — Smoke from the Laguna Fire is expected to increase significantly today and Sunday as fire crews continue firing operations, according to the Santa Fe National Forest.
Forecast Highlights:
- Today (Saturday): Winds will push smoke east-southeast of the fire. Communities along the Rio Chama river corridor, including Cañones, Abiquiú, and Española, may experience smoke levels reaching “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” by late afternoon and evening.
- Overnight: Smoke is expected to settle in the Rio Chama valley, with the highest concentrations near the fire. Areas above Abiquiú Dam could see “Unhealthy” air quality levels.
- Sunday: A similar smoke pattern is expected, but with lighter and more variable winds, meaning smoke may not travel as far. Hazy conditions are likely due to reduced wind dispersion.
- Monday: Winds are forecast to increase, which should help clear lingering smoke and haze from the area.
Health Reminder: People in sensitive groups—such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions—should limit outdoor activities in affected areas.
