ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office has released preliminary information regarding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in southwest Albuquerque.
According to BCSO, a deputy attempted to contact a man riding a bicycle near Churchill Road SW and 62nd Street SW at approximately 11:27 a.m.
Investigators say the man fled from the deputy on the bicycle before abandoning it and continuing on foot.
During the foot pursuit, BCSO says the man armed himself with a knife and advanced toward the deputy while refusing commands to stop.
At approximately 11:29 a.m., the deputy reported shots fired near 64th Street SW and Gonzales Road SW.
The man was struck once and transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. Authorities say he remains in custody.
The deputy was not injured during the encounter.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
The shooting is being investigated by the Multi-Agency Task Force, which handles officer-involved shooting investigations in the Albuquerque area.
BCSO emphasized that the information released is preliminary and could change as investigators continue reviewing evidence and conducting interviews.
