LAS VEGAS, N.M. — A new state-run substance abuse treatment center has opened in Las Vegas, expanding access to addiction recovery services for residents across northern New Mexico.
The Epi-Duran Substance Abuse Treatment Center is now operating out of a renovated state-owned building across from the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute. The facility provides both detox and inpatient treatment services, allowing patients to stay for up to 28 days while receiving care.
Officials say the center fills a critical gap in the region, where many people seeking inpatient treatment previously had to travel to Santa Fe, Albuquerque, or Las Cruces.
“There isn’t a substance use treatment facility in this part of the state,” said Tim Shields, administrator of the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute.
The facility includes 28 beds, divided between men and women, and offers medication management, therapy, and recovery support services. Staff will also work to connect patients with follow-up treatment and community resources after discharge.
The center comes as demand for substance abuse treatment continues to grow across New Mexico. According to state health officials, overdose deaths rose significantly between 2024 and 2025, driven in part by the ongoing fentanyl crisis.
The project was funded through a combination of state, county, and federal dollars and has been in development for nearly a decade.
Officials say admissions will begin gradually, with the facility initially serving up to six patients before expanding to its full capacity of 28 beds.
The Epi-Duran center is now the third state-operated substance abuse treatment facility in New Mexico, joining existing centers in Albuquerque and Roswell.
