Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – – “We want our residents to know that a change in odor doesn’t mean the water’s unsafe, it’s really an aesthetic”, that from City of Las Vegas Water Utility Director Travis Martinez. He was responding to Las Vegas residents saying that their tap water has a pungent smell, describing it as “fishy” or “earthy.” Some have resorted to using bottled water for drinking, cooking, and even bathing due to their concerns. He says that water’s particular smell is due to extreme drought, low water flows, and record high temperatures. The record breaking heat is changing water temperatures, which in turn affects the stability and decay rate of the chlorine in the water – which is used as a disinfectant to keep the water clean as it travels from the treatment plant to the distribution system. The city says the tap water should return to normal once temperatures cool, and if more monsoon rain falls so they can use their main water source.
