LOS LUNAS, N.M. — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado that moved through Los Lunas on Thursday has been classified as an EF-0 landspout.
According to officials, the tornado formed in an open field near Highway 6 and Interstate 25 before crossing both roadways and continuing northeast through the area.
Witness video shows the funnel near Interstate 25 around 3:30 p.m., with reports of power lines being struck and sparks visible.
The storm caused localized damage, including metal awnings being torn from a public health building. Debris from that structure was scattered into nearby parking lots, damaging several vehicles.
At Los Lunas High School, officials say netting from baseball batting cages was lifted into nearby light poles, highlighting the strength of the winds.
Video from the area showed debris circulating within the storm, along with flashes of light as it came into contact with power lines.
Officials say no additional significant damage has been reported, and no injuries were confirmed.
