SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, N.M. — Pecos residents who rely on private wells for drinking water will have an opportunity to get their water tested for free this weekend.
The New Mexico Environment Department and the New Mexico Department of Health are hosting a one-day testing event on Saturday, June 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Village of Pecos Municipal Building on South Main Street.
Testing will be available for the first 100 participants, with services that officials say would typically cost around $150.
The testing will check for nitrate levels and pH balance, both key indicators of water safety. High nitrate levels can pose health risks, especially for pregnant women and infants, and may come from sources such as fertilizer runoff, animal waste, or septic systems.
State officials say the goal of the event is to help private well owners better understand what is in their drinking water and take action if needed.
Residents are asked to bring their own water samples, collected as close to the time of testing as possible, along with basic information about their well, including depth, construction materials, and nearby septic systems.
Those unable to attend can send a sample with someone else, as long as it is clearly labeled with the owner’s information.
Test results will be mailed to participants within two to three weeks.
Officials note that private well owners are responsible for monitoring their own water, unlike public water systems, which are regularly tested and reported.
