ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Bernalillo County has added more than 6,000 new housing units over the past three years, according to updated figures released by the county assessor’s office.
At the request of county commissioners, Assessor Damian Lara shared new data showing that from 2023 through 2026, builders constructed 2,829 single-family homes and added 3,335 multi-family units, including apartments.
County officials say the growth has been seen across all commission districts, expanding housing options throughout the area.
In addition to new construction, the county also highlighted ongoing efforts to redevelop vacant and rundown properties. More than 30 properties have been revitalized, converting previously unused or neglected spaces into housing and commercial developments.
One example is the former JC Penney building — also known as the Gizmo building — in downtown Albuquerque. After sitting vacant for nearly a decade, the property is now being renovated into residential lofts and an art studio.
Officials say the work is part of a broader effort to increase housing availability while improving underutilized spaces. However, county leaders note that additional progress is still needed to address housing demand moving forward.
