Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Bernalillo County will be purchasing approximately 43 acres at 301 Shirk Lane SW near Mountain View Elementary School to move forward on its long-term plans for agricultural land preservation and future park development in the Mountain View neighborhood.
The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners approved the acquisition on a 4 to 0 vote Tuesday. The county authorized a $2.4 million purchase agreement, along with closing costs not to exceed $20,000 in the South Valley District 2. Funding for the acquisition will come primarily from the Open Space Mill Levy, with a portion supported through General Fund dollars tied to development of the future park.
Bernalillo County Parks, Recreation and Open Space plans to preserve the majority of the property as open space and agricultural land while pursuing approvals for a future park on a portion of the site. County officials say the project supports broader efforts to expand access to parks, protect open space, and improve quality of life in the South Valley. Community engagement efforts over the last two years previously identified the Shirk Lane area as a priority location for a future park serving Mountain View residents.
