Mesilla, NM (KKOB) – A priest in southern New Mexico has been suspended following allegations involving stolen records. In a letter to parishioners, the Diocese of Las Cruces says, Father Christopher Williams has been removed from all ministerial duties at the Basilica of San Albino in Mesilla. Bishop Peter Baldacchino removed Father Williams after a Diocesan Finance Council recommended he be removed. The letter also mentions the situation is tied to a September incident involving more than 60-thousand stolen diocesan records.
Church officials say an internal investigation later uncovered alleged involvement by Williams and others connected to the parish. The Diocese says the case has been reported to local law enforcement and the investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile another priest, Father Michael Williams, who is the brother of Father Chris Williams, has taken over duties at the parish in the interim.
