ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Albuquerque Public Schools is bringing back its “Club Read” summer program, encouraging young students to stay engaged in reading while school is out.
The program is open to preschool through fifth-grade students and is designed to support literacy development during the summer months. Students receive a reading scorecard and are challenged to complete six age-appropriate books. After finishing, they can turn in the scorecard at a Dion’s restaurant for a free slice of pizza and a new scorecard.
Participants who complete a second round of reading earn Isotopes-themed prizes and are entered into a grand prize drawing.
APS officials say this could be the first year all elementary schools in the district are participating.
“If we don’t have books in our students’ hands, if we’re not engaging in some of those pieces, there can become a stalling point,” said Anna Chavez, Associate Superintendent of Elementary Learning. “But with this program, it’s going to keep them going.”
The program runs through July 27.
Four students will be selected for the grand prize, which includes four suite-level tickets to an Isotopes game, the opportunity to throw out the first pitch, a custom jersey and an autographed baseball.
