B-21 Raider takes off from Edwards Air Force Base
Washington, DC (KKOB) – New Mexico’s three Air Force and Space Force facilities could see billions of dollars from the Trump administration’s $1.5 trillion defense budget request for fiscal year 2027. The budget request includes $57 billion nationally for facility modernization and restoration specifically targeting substandard barracks such as the barracks at White Sands Missile Range As part of this year’s allocations, $195 million was designated for upgrades at Kirtland, Holloman and Cannon Air Force bases.
That includes $83 million to construct a new Space Rapid Capabilities Office headquarters at Kirtland in Albuquerque and $90 million for a new 192-bed dormitory at Cannon Air Force Base. The budget proposal includes $71.4 billion for nuclear modernization, which includes more funding for the B-21 Raider bomber which is relevant to Cannon AFB and Holloman AFB and the Sentinel ICBM program which would provide more money to Sandia National Labs. Another large portion of the proposed budget includes pay increases between 5 and 7 percent for lower and higher ranked enlisted personnel.
The increase in defense spending is 44%, several congressional members both Republican and Democrat, are skeptical on whether that amount will be approved.
