ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The road to a championship will continue Saturday night for New Mexico United, but it will do so without one of the club’s most dynamic attacking players.
As the top seed in the Western Conference prepares to host rival Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the USL Championship Western Conference Semifinals, United announced that forward Cristian Nava has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 postseason after suffering a severe knee sprain during the club’s opening-round victory over Phoenix Rising FC.
The injury casts a shadow over what has otherwise been a remarkable week for New Mexico.
United enters the semifinal riding the momentum of a commanding 2-0 playoff victory over Phoenix, a match that showcased the club’s championship aspirations and sent more than 9,000 supporters home believing this could finally be the year. Now, a place in the Western Conference Final is just one win away.
But playoff runs are often defined not only by the goals scored, but by the players lost along the way.
An MRI confirmed Nava’s severe knee sprain suffered against Phoenix. While the injury ends his postseason, the club says he is expected to make a full recovery and return for the 2027 season.
For a player who has become an important piece of United’s attack, the timing could not be worse.
Now the challenge shifts to the rest of the roster.
Saturday’s matchup with Colorado Springs presents one of the most significant tests of New Mexico’s season. The Switchbacks arrive in Albuquerque seeking to spoil United’s title hopes, while the home side will look to continue its strongest playoff push in years.
The stakes are simple: win and advance to the Western Conference Final. Lose and the season ends.
United has spent the better part of the year establishing itself as one of the USL Championship’s elite clubs. On Saturday night, with a championship dream still alive and a key contributor watching from the sidelines, the Black and Yellow will try to take one more step forward.
