SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico is recognizing Law Day on Friday, an annual observance focused on the importance of the rule of law and its role in American society.
In a proclamation, New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Julie J. Vargas encouraged residents to reflect on how the rule of law supports fundamental rights and democratic values. Vargas noted that the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence — including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — are given meaning through laws that are applied fairly and consistently.
Law Day is observed each year on May 1. The national observance began in 1958 with a proclamation by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, honoring the commitment to laws that apply equally to all individuals and institutions.
The proclamation also emphasized the role of courts in New Mexico and across the country, describing the judiciary as a key institution responsible for interpreting state and federal laws and ensuring accountability under those laws.
Chief Justice Vargas described Law Day as an opportunity to recognize how the legal system helps shape both the state and the nation, reinforcing the idea that a just society is governed by law rather than by individuals.
The full Law Day proclamation is available through the New Mexico Supreme Court.
