Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – Speed cameras will be back in operation in Santa Fe after the city council approved a new contract with a company to provide hardware and software for the automated speed and sound enforcement system around the city.
Santa Fe police say the move allows the department to relaunch the Santa Fe Traffic Operations Program, known as STOP, which will use speed and sound cameras to capture speeding and excessive vehicle noise violations.
The program previously operated from 2008 to 2013 before being discontinued. Police say the decision comes after years of community requests and increased concerns about speeding, unsafe driving, and loud vehicles.
Under the program, speeding fines will be fifty dollars, or one hundred dollars in school and construction zones. Noise violations could carry fines of up to five hundred dollars.
Failure to pay traffic violations or to appear in court may result in an arrest warrant being issued.
