Farmington, NM (KKOB) – A Farmington man is in custody, charged with first-degree murder in a deadly stabbing less than a month after his release from jail.
Police say 29-year-old Andrew Begay is accused in the death of 43-year-old Eli Newton. Farmington officers were called to a home in the 400 block of East Broadway around 12:30 in the morning for a welfare check. When they arrived, they found Newton suffering from multiple stab wounds to his body, head, and throat.
He was rushed to San Juan Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
Investigators arrested Begay, who is now being held at the San Juan County Detention Center. Court records show Begay was on probation pending an appeal of a probation violation at the time of the stabbing, and he is listed as homeless.
The case remains under investigation.
