Eric Strauss and the Viper Pit are looking for the best backyard pitmasters in Albuquerque for the 2nd Annual Viper Pit Pitmaster BBQ Contest, Friday, September 25 at the Elks Lodge.
You don’t need to be a professional competition cook. If your friends, family and neighbors keep telling you your BBQ is the best around, this is your chance to prove it.
To qualify for prizes, each competitor or team must bring:
One BBQ item
Brisket, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, sausage or your own BBQ specialty.

Beans, mac and cheese, slaw, potato salad, green chile creation or whatever you think completes the plate.

We’ll supply the competition. You bring the BBQ.

Viper Pit Pitmaster BBQ Contest Rules
- Each competitor or team must enter one BBQ item and one side dish to qualify for prizes.
- BBQ entries may include brisket, ribs, pork, chicken, sausage or another BBQ-style specialty.
- Competitors are responsible for providing their own food, equipment, utensils, serving supplies, tables, chairs, pop-ups or tents and anything needed to keep food at a safe serving temperature.
- Competitor check-in begins at 4:00 PM. Entries must be ready for judging at the designated judging time.
- All food must be safely prepared, stored and served.
- Entries will be judged on taste, appearance and overall impression.
- Contestants are responsible for keeping their competition area clean.
- Judges’ decisions are final.
- Have fun, talk trash responsibly and bring your best BBQ.
