Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – In a story we brought to you on Thursday, regarding an attempted hack into the digital library at the University of New Mexico in May of this year the university has sent News Radio KKOB a statement regarding what happened. The information regarding the attempted hack was part of a report by AI safety company Transluce. OpenAI was apparently trying to retrieve a picture from the university’s Valmora collection, but failed.
According to the report, the attempted hack was part of a number of incidents in May and June, where OpenAI agents tried to bypass data collection restrictions for several websites including one involving the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
In a statement UNM says,:
“The University of New Mexico is aware of the incident reported in the media involving an unsuccessful cyberattack on a UNM Libraries system, which is hosted by a third-party. Our internal investigation to date, which included outreach to the service provider for the digital collection management service hosting the data that was targeted, found no evidence that UNM systems or data were compromised. UNM takes cybersecurity very seriously. Our systems and staff monitor potential threats and modify the University’s cyber-defenses as necessary to address evolving risks.”
