ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The City of Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department is looking for community members interested in helping care for shelter animals through its volunteer program.
To recruit new volunteers, the department will host a League of Volunteers Fair on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Eastside Shelter, located at 8920 Lomas Blvd. NE.
The event will give attendees an opportunity to learn about volunteer roles available throughout the shelter system. Positions include walking dogs, socializing cats, photographing adoptable pets, assisting at adoption events, and helping support daily shelter operations.
Visitors will also be able to meet some of the shelter animals, tour the facility, speak with staff members, and receive assistance completing volunteer applications on site.
According to the city, volunteers must be at least 18 years old and commit to a minimum of six hours per month. Training is provided, and schedules are designed to be flexible.
City leaders say volunteers play a significant role in supporting animal care and helping pets prepare for adoption.
Those interested in participating can attend the volunteer fair or apply through the city’s Animal Welfare Department website.
