ESTANCIA, N.M. — The Estancia Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to remove Amy May from her position as mayor pro tem and appoint fellow trustee Martin Lucero to the role.
The move comes after May recently faced an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on two charges alleging the unlawful sale of alcoholic beverages. The warrant was later canceled after May appeared before a judge, paid a fee, and requested a public defender.
During Tuesday’s meeting, trustees said the town needs someone available to assume mayoral duties if the mayor is unable to serve.
“We need somebody to be able to take calls and be there in the event the mayor cannot be there,” one board member said during the discussion.
While May was removed from the mayor pro tem position, she will continue serving as a member of the Estancia Board of Trustees.
Lucero, who already serves on the board, will now take on the responsibilities of mayor pro tem.
May is scheduled to return to court next month as the case proceeds.
