Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman announcing he will make public a dashboard that tracks repeat offenders released before trial in an effort for the public to have a better understanding of what is happening between the arrests and the courtrooms.
The dashboard will show how many suspects are held in custody and how many are released before trial by a judge.
A poll by the Albuquerque Journal shows that more than 82 percent of voters view crime as a serious community issue.
Bregman says that since January 2023, the DA’s office has recorded 477 homicide convictions and more than 1,000 shoplifting convictions. But says there is still significant work to be done, particularly in juvenile reform.
According to the DA, it has been decades since any meaningful changes have been done to the state’s Children’s Code, and noted that also since 2023, more than 80 juveniles have been charged with murder in Bernalillo County.
He expressed a desire to engage state legislators to increase discussions around juvenile crime prevention and rehabilitation.
