SANTA FE, N.M. — The New Mexico Department of Health is encouraging residents to receive the updated 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine, which is expected to begin arriving in the state next week.
The recommendation follows the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of updated COVID-19 vaccines on Aug. 27 for the current respiratory virus season.
According to NMDOH, providers in New Mexico will be able to offer the vaccine under a statewide standing order that allows broader access following state health guidelines.
State health officials say vaccination remains an important tool for reducing the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death associated with COVID-19.
The department says the updated vaccine is especially recommended for:
- Adults age 65 and older
- People at increased risk of severe COVID-19 illness
- Individuals who have never received a COVID-19 vaccine
- Pregnant people, to help protect both the parent and infant
NMDOH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Miranda Durham said the standing order ensures access for anyone seeking the updated vaccine.
