SANTA FE, N.M. — A Santa Fe man is facing an aggravated battery charge after police say he struck another man with a machete during an altercation early Tuesday morning.
According to the Santa Fe Police Department, officers responded to the Thunderbird Inn, located at 1821 Cerrillos Road, shortly after midnight following reports of a fight involving a man armed with a machete.
When officers arrived, they detained Ramon Garcia, 48, of Santa Fe, who was identified as one of the individuals involved in the incident.
Investigators say Garcia told officers he had been confronted and threatened by another man outside his apartment. Garcia allegedly retrieved a machete for protection and struck the man in the shoulder during the confrontation.
The victim sustained a laceration to his shoulder and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police said Garcia was not injured.
Witnesses told investigators they observed an argument between the two men and saw Garcia swing the machete. The victim confirmed he had been struck, though officers said he provided limited details about what happened.
Garcia was arrested and booked into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Facility on a charge of aggravated battery.
The case remains under investigation.
