Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – Santa Fe city councilors are expected to vote tonight on a proposal to significantly expand the police department’s drone program. The proposed $2.2 million contract would establish a “drone as first responder” program, allowing drones to be dispatched to certain calls before officers arrive. Under the plan, six new drones would be stationed at the south-side police station, Midtown Campus, and Fort Marcy Park.
Police say the technology could assist with investigations and provide real-time information during emergencies. The proposal has also drawn concern from some community members, who question how expanding drone use could impact privacy and surveillance.
