ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to lead six major research projects and participate in 17 additional teams through the newly launched Genesis Mission, a nationwide effort aimed at accelerating scientific discovery through artificial intelligence.
The Genesis Mission is designed to bring together national laboratories, universities, industry partners, and government agencies to combine artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, quantum technologies, and advanced scientific research tools to address complex national challenges.
Sandia’s six lead projects focus on a wide range of areas, including fusion energy materials, critical mineral exploration, climate and water systems, advanced fluid modeling, subsurface energy resources, and AI-assisted scientific reasoning.
Laboratory officials say the initiative is intended to create new AI-powered research workflows that can speed scientific breakthroughs, improve predictive capabilities, and help researchers solve challenges related to energy production, national security, advanced manufacturing, and environmental systems.
In addition to leading six projects, Sandia researchers will collaborate on 17 other Genesis Mission teams exploring topics such as materials discovery, water and energy systems, synthetic biology, quantum science, advanced nuclear technologies, and electric grid analysis.
Sandia National Laboratories Director Laura McGill said the selections highlight the laboratory’s ability to combine advanced computing, artificial intelligence, and engineering expertise to tackle critical national priorities.
The project selections were announced during the Genesis Mission Summit in Washington, D.C., where leaders from the Department of Energy, national laboratories, academia, and industry gathered to discuss the future of AI-enabled scientific research.
