ELEPHANT BUTTE, N.M. — New Mexico State Parks is continuing efforts to maintain safe access and recreational opportunities at Elephant Butte Lake State Park as water levels at the reservoir decline amid ongoing drought conditions.
According to park officials, water releases from the reservoir are expected to continue through July 28, exposing shoreline areas, debris, and terrain that are normally underwater.
To address the changing conditions, crews are removing exposed debris, clearing silt from boat ramps, and making adjustments to help maintain safe boating access. A long-reach excavator is currently being used at the Marina del Sur boat ramp to improve access as water levels continue to drop.
Officials said additional debris removal efforts will continue throughout the summer and fall, particularly in high-use areas and locations where exposed hazards could pose safety concerns.
The State Parks Division is also working with engineers, marine construction experts, and federal agencies to evaluate both short-term and long-term solutions for maintaining public access to the lake.
Despite the challenges, Elephant Butte Lake State Park remains open, and visitors can continue to enjoy camping, hiking, wildlife viewing, shoreline recreation, fishing, and paddle sports.
State officials say no harmful algae blooms have been detected at the reservoir at this time.
