Los Lunas, NM (KKOB) – New Mexico State Police Investigators will continue their work for information on an officer-involved shooting involving an NMSP officer in Los Lunas, over the weekend.
According to initial reports, a State Police officer was trying to make a traffic stop involving a Dodge pickup truck on Manzano Road. The driver did not immediately stop, and continued until he arrived to the area of Sierra Vista Drive in Meadow Lake.
During the stop, the driver, identified as 53-year old Jesus Munoz Duran got out of his vehicle, and refused to follow commands from the officer to raise his hands and instead at some point Munoz pulled a gun and fired it at the officer. The officer then returned fire striking Munoz. The officer rendered aid to Munoz until paramedics arrived. Munoz was later pronounced dead on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
Munoz was currently on probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was a convicted felon.
No officers were injured during this incident. This incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Investigations Bureau.
