Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) – According to Albuquerque Police, an Albuquerque man told officers he left his home early Sunday morning with the intent to kill someone because of his hatred for the homeless community. 44-year old Arturo Jose Nallez was arrested Sunday in connection with the shooting that killed a man around 1 a.m. Sunday in the area of Central Ave and Rio Grande Blvd near Old Town.
A ShotSpotter activation and several 911 calls reported that several shots had been fired in the area and when officers arrived they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to UNMH where he later died from his injuries. Information on whether the victim was homeless or not was not released by APD.
Thanks to ShotSpotter, Automatic License Plate Readers and video surveillance, homicide detectives were able to see a Land Rover SUV in the area of the shooting as well as Nallez’s description.
When police arrived to his home in Northwest Albuquerque, police say he admitted to the shooting and showed detectives the 9mm handgun which was hidden under the hood of the SUV. That’s when he allegedly told police that he had left his home with the specific intent to shoot someone because of his hatred for the unhoused community.
He is charged with an Open Count of murder, shooting from a motor vehicle and tampering with evidence.
