ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office says the innocent bystander critically injured in a road‑rage shooting earlier this month has died, and two suspects are now in custody.
Officials confirmed that 21‑year‑old Roberto Carlos Pineda Arriaza died late Monday, April 21, after suffering a gunshot wound to the head during the April 18 shooting in southwest Albuquerque.
Sheriff’s
detectives say Pineda Arriaza was not involved in the dispute and was struck as two vehicles exchanged gunfire. Investigators identified Rory Horowitz as the primary suspect and Ellyssa Salazar as a second suspect connected to the case.
With assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, the El Paso Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies in Texas, both Horowitz and Salazar were located at a residence in El Paso and taken into custody.
Horowitz was previously wanted on charges including shooting at or from a motor vehicle causing great bodily harm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Detectives are now seeking an amended warrant to include an open count of murder.
Salazar was arrested on charges including tampering with evidence and harboring a fugitive.
Investigators say a Mitsubishi registered to Salazar was linked to the shooting, though the vehicle has not yet been located. Witness statements and other evidence developed during the investi
gation tied Horowitz to the gunfire, according to the arrest affidavit.
The extradition process is underway to return both suspects to New Mexico. Authorities say the homicide investigation remains active and additional charges may be filed as evidence continues to be reviewed.
Anyone with information related to the case or the missing vehicle is encouraged to submit an anonymous tip through Tip411.
