Santa Fe, NM (KKOB) – New Mexico is among more than 25 states being sued by the U.S. Department of Justice over access to voter registration records.
The DOJ is demanding unredacted voter rolls that would include the last four digits of Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and driver’s license information. Federal attorneys told the court the data is needed to evaluate state compliance with federal voting rights laws, including how states handle duplicate voter registrations.
The case is now before Senior U.S. District Judge Judith Herrera in Albuquerque. During arguments, Judge Herrera questioned the DOJ’s request and said she did not see a clear reason for demanding the sensitive information. State officials argued that New Mexico law requires those details to be redacted and that the state is already in compliance with federal law. After hours of arguments, the judge did not issue a ruling, leaving the case unresolved.
