ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – A major winter storm dropped snow, sleet, and freezing rain across large portions of the United States over the weekend, stretching from New Mexico to the East Coast and as far north as Maine.
The storm has since moved out of New Mexico, but cold conditions remain, and some communities are still dealing with the impacts from snowfall that began Friday and lasted through Sunday.
Ruidoso was among the areas hardest hit. Heavy snow led to power outages affecting approximately 8,000 customers. As of Monday morning, PNM crews were actively working to restore power in the area.
Snow totals varied across the state, with the highest amounts reported in mountain communities. Ski Apache in Ruidoso recorded 31 inches of snowfall, the highest total in New Mexico from this storm. Other ski areas also saw significant accumulation, with Taos Ski Valley reporting around 10 inches and Sipapu just under a foot.
According to data from the National Weather Service, several other communities across the state recorded measurable snowfall as the storm moved through. Crews continue addressing remaining impacts as temperatures stay below average for this time of year.
