SAN JUAN COUNTY, N.M. — Health officials are urging residents who rely on private well water to take precautions following recent flooding that impacted communities across northwest New Mexico.
Officials warn that wells submerged by floodwaters or located near flooded areas may be contaminated and could pose health risks if the water is consumed without proper testing.
Until water quality can be verified, residents are advised to use bottled water, disinfected water, or water that has been brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute for drinking, cooking, and food preparation.
To assist residents, free well water testing is being offered in Bloomfield and Aztec.
